Perfect for when you're craving something warm and comforting, these savory cheese scones are a delightful twist on the classic sweet scone. Packed with sharp cheddar, they boast a rich cheesy flavor while maintaining a beautifully flaky and tender texture. These scrumptious scones are easy to whip up, making them an ideal side for your favorite soup or salad, or even as a stand-alone snack. Serve them fresh out of the oven with a pat of butter for a simple yet indulgent treat that everyone will love.
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Add 1/2 cup of cold cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in 1 1/2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
In a small bowl, beat together 1/2 cup of whole milk and 1 egg. Pour the mixture over the dry ingredients and gently stir with a fork until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times. Pat it into a round disc about 1 inch thick.
Using a sharp knife, cut the disc into 8 wedges, like a pie, and place them a few inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Transfer the scones to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm, with butter if desired.
