Start your day strong with the Dutch Uitsmijter! This versatile breakfast or lunch dish brings together crispy, toasted bread with perfectly fried sunny-side-up eggs, a generous layer of savory ham, and optional melted cheese for a truly comforting meal. It's called 'bouncer' in Dutch, and once you've tried it, you'll understand why—this meal will wake you up and keep you going through the day with a smile.
Toast the bread slices until golden brown and crispy.
In a frying pan, melt a small amount of butter over medium heat.
Crack the eggs into the pan, keeping them separate to cook as individual sunny-side-up eggs. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper to taste.
While the eggs are cooking, heat the sliced ham in a separate small pan until warm.
Once the eggs are cooked with set whites and runny yolks, remove from heat.
Place a slice of ham on each piece of toasted bread. If using cheese, place a cheese slice over the ham.
Carefully place a sunny-side-up egg on top of the ham (or cheese if used) on each piece of bread.
Serve immediately with a side salad or fresh vegetables, if desired.
